Rocky Dawuni advises artistes not to focus on hit songs

Renowned musician, Rocky Dawuni, has advised artists and songwriters to prioritize creating meaningful lyrics and improving their craft over simply making hit songs.

According to the songwriter and producer, hits may be relevant for a fleeting period of time and can fade away when their moment in the spotlight has expired.

“Focus on your craft and work on your lyrics. You can’t always be enamored by hits. Hits are today, and tomorrow are forgotten if [they don’t] have something really integral to the song,” he said in an interview on TV3.

He emphasized the need to adopt a more holistic approach to songwriting to create music that will have a meaningful impact.

“I always try to say that we should work hard to create a holistic approach to songwriting and let our words mean something,” he added.

Rocky Dawuni’s lyrics from his song “Walls Tumbling Down” recently found a place at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly when Barbadian Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley, incorporated them in her speech.

The musician said he was greatly humbled by such an honor.
