The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ntim, has issued an unreserved apology to the management and staff of United Television (UTV) for the unwarranted actions of some party youth who stormed the station’s studios.
An angry mob affiliated with the NPP interrupted UTV’s late-night live show United Showbiz last Saturday, October 7, 2023, demanding to see Ghanaian musician and activist, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus.
They claimed A Plus had disrespected their party by tearing up a letter they had addressed to the management of the TV station, asking for reforms to the evening show, which they argued had become politicized, meant to denigrate the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led administration.
The agitated individuals, 16 of whom were later arrested by the police, took up seats reserved for guests, while some called out the name of A Plus, demanding his whereabouts.
NPP’s leadership later said that the party had no hand in the youth’s actions.
Chairman Ntim, also dissatisfied with what happened, condemned the incident and rendered an unqualified apology to UTV during a conversation on Peace FM on Thursday.
“On behalf of the party, I’m rendering an unqualified apology to the management of Despite Media, to you Kwami Sefa Kayi, and all Ghanaians for what happened. The NPP tradition does not countenance such misbehavior as we are noted to be disciplined people,” he said.
He added that measures will be put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“I want to assure you that going forward the party leadership will ensure that no such reprehensible act is repeated. We will be guided by discipline in our actions, you can count on us,” Chairman Ntim further stated.
