Why alleged New Patriotic Party (NPP) hooligans invaded UTV has been revealed.
Some individuals allegedly belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) invaded the studio of United Television (UTV) on Saturday, October 7, 2023, during the station’s late-night show, “United Showbiz”.
Police had to intervene to prevent the invaders from causing further disruption. 16 suspected persons were arrested.
They stormed the studio because they believed the show had become a political affair meant to degrade President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia’s administration.
They also wanted an unreserved apology from musician and political activist Kwame Asare Obeng, known better as A Plus, whom they said had disrespected their party by tearing up a letter which they had addressed to the management of UTV, demanding reforms to the show.
They took up seats that had been reserved for the show’s guests. Several videos shared on social media showed a state of agitation as the individuals called out for A Plus.
Gospel musician Sonnie Badu, who was supposed to appear on the show later relayed what transpired saying, “We saw about 50 thugs invading the premises and attacked some of the workers and producers. One of the producers told us to leave the premises, I was hoping to be on the show but safety first, I’m so sorry, hopefully, one day I will get there. God bless you”.
The event has been criticized by many, including the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Meanwhile, the leadership of the NPP have rendered an apology to UTV and its management for what they said was an unsanctioned act.
National Communications Director for NPP, Richard Ahiagbah said that it was an unfortunate activity, however, his outfit knew nothing about it.
