Ghana News: The Founder and General Overseer of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, and President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba have both resigned from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project in Ghana.
The project has been one of the major topics of contention in the country since it was initiated by President Akufo-Addo, with many calling it a misplaced priority.
The resignation of both religious leaders is the newest development in the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral.
Both Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba explained that the reason for their resignation stems from the absence of an independent government-appointed accounting firm to audit all public funds that have been contributed to the project’s completion.
“Despite our prayers, best hopes, and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we awaited news to no avail, regarding the finding of the audit.
“We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral,” they said in a joint statement to President Akufo-Addo.
The two religious leaders had in a letter to the Board of Trustees in January 2023 already expressed skepticism about the timely completion of the project, considering the current state of the economy, and called for its suspension until Ghana experienced some economic turnaround. They also called for an audit of the project.
“The current economic climate in Ghana presents obstacles to the timely construction and completion of the National Cathedral… We, therefore, resolve: That in the spirit and cause of transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people, the current Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral shall appoint an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to and spent by the National Cathedral,” they said.
It will also be recalled that in August 2022, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, founder and leader of the Lighthouse Chapel International, resigned from the National Cathedral project, citing similar reasons in his letter to the Board of Trustees.
