Veteran Ghanaian lawyer and human rights activist, Anthony Akoto Ampaw, has died.

The renowned legal practitioner died on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC).

Reports indicate that he had been battling an illness since the year began.

Lawyer Ampaw was an esteemed associate at Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co., the reputable law firm associated with President Akufo-Addo, and was famously known for representing the President in the 2020 election petition at the Supreme Court.

He was also on the legal team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2012 election petition.

Mr Ampaw was tipped to be named Ghana’s first independent Special Prosecutor, however, the position eventually went to former Attorney General Martin Amidu.

He was a graduate of the University of Ghana, LL.B., 1973 and was known as “Che Che” right from his university days. He was also an alumnus of the Ghana School of Law, B.L., 1993.

Although details surrounding his passing are scanty, tributes from some Ghanaians and the legal fraternity are flooding social media in honour of the veteran lawyer.
